CONGRATULATIONS to our Golden Horseshoe winners: Millie Durham (4th grade) - 79 miles Isabel Miller (3rd grade) - 78 miles   Millie and Isabel jogged at Mustang Trotters AND logged miles outside of Trotters, which is fantastic and exemplifies a healthy, active lifestyle. Great job girls!

Overhand Throw

Image
Recently in PE, we have been learning about and practicing the overhand throw.  We use an overhand throw when the target is far away.  It is important to know how to throw when playing baseball, softball, or football.  The pictures below show some of the students' favorite overhand throwing games. Bumper Ball Students are divided into 2 teams.  Target balls of various sizes are set up on the middle line.  Students use the overhand throw to try and bump the target balls to roll over the other teams' throwing line.  Once all the target balls have crossed the line they are scored; the team that bumped the most balls across the line wins.  The giant pink ball always adds excitement to the game! Angry Birds Another fan favorite is Angry Birds.  Students are divided into 2 teams.  Each team throws "angry birds" at the other teams' pig pens.  Guards block angry birds from knocking down the pig pens. Whichever team knocks down all the pig pens, win

Climbing Wall, Striking, and More....

Image
Recently in PE.... We have been doing climbing wall and learning about how it helps our bodies.  Climbing wall helps our bodies in many ways: builds muscular strength and muscular endurance builds confidence increases focus and concentration increases balance and flexibility builds grip strength In K-2 we worked on climbing up and down the wall as well as traverse (sideways or across).  Grades 3-5 are more experienced climbers so we added challenges like moving a ball from a high to low position while climbing. In grades K-2 we learned various hula hoop tricks and practiced bowling skills. In grades 3-5 we have been working on striking skills. We discussed how to strike the ball and how force plays a role in striking. As well, we discussed the importance of agility, being in the ready position, and moving our feet to the ball. The students enjoy playing foursquare and wall ball.                                     Another fun game

UGA Ice Hockey Team

The 5th graders had a blast during the UGA Ice Hockey visit.  Students participated in a hockey shoot out and played a little 3-on-3.  Although UGA has had an ice hockey team for 27 years this is their first year having their own ice rink at the Classic Center. For more info check out their website:  http://ugahockey.com/

Welcome Back!

Image
The 2014-2015 school year has gotten off to a great start!  It is great to see old and new faces this year. We are having a blast learning new things in PE.  In K-2 we are learning and reviewing personal space and locomotor skills.  The students love being in their spaceship bubble when playing Spaceship Tag. In 3-5 we are doing Team Building activities.  We are learning about the importance of teamwork, communication, and cooperation.  It's great for kids to know how to work together and problem solve. They really enjoyed working together during our Shipwreck game.

Jump Rope for Heart

Parents, I wanted to make you aware of some small, simple ways to contribute to the American Heart Association.  Every year we get a new Jump Rope for Heart banner.  The banner consists of two colors which change each year.  Students can guess the banner colors for 25 cents with an unlimited number of guesses.  In addition, students can purchase hearts (“In Memory of,” “In Honor of,” or “I’m a Heart Hero because”) for friends or family that have or had sick hearts.  Each heart costs 25 cents and will be displayed on our Heart Wall in the gym.  Students can bring money to PE in a ziplock bag or envelope.  Please include names for Memory and Honor hearts. Thank you for your support in helping kids and people with sick hearts. Coach Little
